Someone mentioned how he observed loud, self promoting, BSers (his words) were being very successful around him.
First thing that came to mind: Adam Grant’s Give and Take insisting from studies, that the giver who knows how to ask for his income, wins than the taker. The taker is sensed, and avoided – he says. I would be a giver than a taker anyway.
Leads to the thought: someone else’s heaven, however great, can be my hell. (Bhaaratham?). Maybe it works for Duryodhana, but one lie can keep Yudhishtiran in eternal struggle?
And… Kahneman. Take 4 balls each time out of a big collection of red and white balls. Take 7 balls instead. The number of times all the balls being of same color is approximately 8 times more in the 4 balls situation.
Did the observer really take enough sample size? Sample size calculators available online. Most often 300+ sample size recommended. Did the observer really look at the total number of times BSers were successful? Or did he just want to jump into a conclusion? Apparently even statisticians make such sample size mistakes?
There is one thing I will confidently root for – my products, the change my service can make. If my work or product is not good, I wouldn’t want anyone to use it.
I would talk about it and offer my service or product only because I have seen from enough samples, the change it can make, and the less effective alternatives the user has. In which case, I won’t be shy letting them know the observed benefits, how they will progress faster and surer, collapsing time, highly increasing the likelihood of them closing the gap between where they are and their goals.
On the other hand, even if the loud for loud sake, won with their methods, I don’t want that audience. Let me be with what I am comfortable with and what I feel tasteful… There is no logic to that taste. Let it be.
Finally, I also realized that… I am used to people who have clear achievements – products or performance. And it never occurred that bragging had to be a part of being accepted and rewarded. It just wanted tasteful in my circles and the absence of laying it thick was so peaceful and in place.
Not everyone have results to show. They don’t have the idea that it is possible either.
Their world exists. Mine too. Just that maybe they don’t have to mix.
Let all be. While paying attention to some statistics and distortions like jumping to conclusions… Let us just be. Play our own music.
