Thoughts on some real life heuristics

Due to technical reasons, I couldn’t complete a visa application by myself.

Doing the application with my son while guiding him on a call is possible. He is good with details. But he is still not an adult used to official forms, uploads, submissions, and payments. So I would have to stay fully alert, check everything carefully, and handle any problem with the website, questions, uploads, or payment.

My cousin, on the other hand, is already used to forms and online processes. She can do the steps faster, with less stress and confusion. I can give her the correct details in a compiled form and check everything before submission.

This reminds me of a useful lesson from competitive exams like JEE. A clever instructor once said: if two questions give the same marks, there is no extra prize for choosing the harder one when time is limited. Sounds obvious, but when it is not reduced to such easily memorized heuristics, we end up in confusion, going the wrong route.

That applies here too. The outcome is important, time is limited, and there are two possible routes. One is simpler and more reliable. The other is more difficult and requires more attention, energy, and problem-solving.

The reason I got into this discussion with myself was that I wondered whether I was delaying or making an excuse by choosing the easier path. I had to think clearly.

The task has real friction because visa forms need attention, correct details, uploads, payment, and handling possible technical issues. My son may be good with details, but he is still a child and not used to official form filling and submission, so I would have to stay fully alert throughout. My cousin is more familiar with forms and online processes, which reduces risk and makes the route simpler and more reliable. This does not look like avoidance, because I am not refusing the task or disappearing from it; I am choosing the easier reliable route while still staying responsible for the correct details and final checking.

Nothing to prove. No need to use this for teachable moments. No prize tags attached. The sensible decision is to choose the easier reliable route and get the result done. Got the visa.
